Give a child an opportunity.
Example of a Story Promoting a Cause
Megan didn’t have an idea of what happened to her
mother and didn’t know a father.  She grew up with her
grandmother in a tiny house.  When we once visited the
house, the queue of people we met seemed endless.
There were so many people in such a small place.
But there seemed to be much love.

Megan attended an aftercare centre, run by a charity,
which is where we met her.  She had a charming
personality, full of happiness and enthusiasm, but her
appearance was shabby.  She was thin, her clothes
were worn, and her entire appearance one of physical
neglect.

As we got to know her, we could see this ten-year-old
had potential.  She just loved to show off her gymnastic
skills.  Her tall, skinny body managed some very
graceful gymnastic moves.  When I asked her about it, I
learned that it was all self-taught.
My heart yearned to create an opportunity for her to
receive proper coaching in gymnastics, but who would
fund it?  The crowd of poor people in the tiny house
certainly did not have the funds to pay for such luxuries -
they barely had enough money for healthy food.
Have you seen the opera singer, Susan
Boyle’s original audition on Britain’s Got
Talent?

Everyone in the audience looked at her sceptically, for
she had this old-fashioned appearance of an ordinary
person from a simple background.
But when she opened her mouth, the scene changed.
Everyone was awed by her talent to sing.  Since then
her life has changed to that of a singing star.
a child to develop into what she is now?

It’s not clear at what age she started to sing.

Being the youngest of ten children, the daughter of a
miner and a shorthand typist, her parents thought she
had been briefly deprived of oxygen during a difficult
birth, resulting in a learning disability.  It was only at the
age of 51 that they found she has Asperger syndrome
with an above-average IQ and not the original
diagnosis.  She had some vocal coaching before, sang
in a choir, and joined an acting school, but can you
imagine what could have been if someone had helped
her as a child to develop into what she is now.

How many children would have loved to
have opportunities to develop their
talents?

Every time you see a child begging on a street
corner, or drive past a shanty town and see the
shabby children playing in the dust, could you
please look in your heart for a vision of what some
of them could become with a little help?

When you lavishly spoil yourself and your family
from the income you so much deserve, have you
ever thought of the joy of being the hero that would
turn that dusty child into a shining, smiling star?
You now probably feel like telling me I’m nuts.  Did I
know how many poor people there are that would
have loved such opportunities?  I know, but if you
help to turn only one child into a person making a
difference to the world, you have a medal in your
heart that would cause you to swell with pride every
time you see or hear of the difference you have
made.
